The 2009 Presidential Luncheon was held as usual by Lionel Wernick at the Thornescroft Restaurant and was very well attended, with over 100 former pupils and teaching staff attending. The weather was kind and the sun shone all day, with shirt sleeves being the order of the day, due to the very warm and pleasant conditions.
Amongst the honoured guests, was Iris Swain (nee Docherty, 'tick-tock' to her schoolmates), former pupil (1935-1940) and later teacher at the Muni. Although well over 80 years young now, she was in good spirits despite a crippling illness, (osteoporosis) the organisation for which she has campaigned tirelessly for a number of years. The Patron of the National Osteoporosis Society, is the Duchess of Cornwall with whom Iris has had a long friendship, with both their mothers having suffered from this wasting disease. In recognition of her campaigning work, Iris was invited to the wedding of HRH the Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles and to the after wedding party at Windsor Castle.
Iris still lives in the Wolverhampton area and despite her condition, still leads a very active life, including going on cruises. The Association wishes her well for the future.
Lionel gave an excellent speech, hoping that everyone had enjoyed the event, thanked the staff at the Thornescroft for their excellent organisation of the lunch and most importantly expressed his view that the main purpose of the Association was to keep friendships and to enjoy good company for all who had been connected with the Muni.
There were many photos taken this year, by John MacKay (1946-49) & Roger Wright (1955-1960), a selection of which are contained in the Slide Shows below: JM's - Left, RW's - Right. Click on the buttons underneath the slideshow frame, to start, pause or stop the show.
There are too many names to identify you all but we hope that the selection shows as many as possible who attended and enjoyed the occasion.
Thanks again to the photographers for capturing the event so well.
